Unless you were using an older version and then updated after you were having problems. The latest CHIRP looks at the radio and the image to see if a 16 byte section matches or not. If they don't match the upload is aborted.

Did confirm that my older UV-5R did allow Chirp to read the program I have in it. So Chirp can read the older radio just fine.
