For the 1953 German–Austrian Nanga Parbat expedition Peter Aschenbrenner [de] (50 years), an Austrian mountain guide, was appointed deputy to Herrligkoffer (36 years) and was to be the climbing leader on the mountain. He had been on the 1932 and 1934 expeditions. He was due to leave the expedition at the beginning of July so Walter Frauenberger [de] (45), also Austrian, who was initially deputy climbing leader, took over at that time.
